February 2010

snow

Notice the mounds of manure and mud pushed out of the pens from the last thirty days.

From John’s Desk:

●February has been wet, cold and muddy for the whole month. The pens have been muddy for quite some time now. We are just now able to get into the pens with equipment to clean. We have 5 loaders and 2 scraping tractors going constantly on pen maintenance. If we can miss the moisture forecasted for this weekend we can dry out pretty good.

● Incoming heifers have had it best, as we had a crew bedding pens day and night during rain and snow periods. Condition on intermediate and springing heifers has dropped off some. We have added cracked corn and corn gluten to our rations in order to pick them back up. It will take a couple of weeks to get them back in the shape they were before this last cold and muddy month. The days and nights seem to have warmed up some, maybe we have turned the corner toward spring.

●Spring wheat has started to grow and we are putting in some spring oats for silage. Moisture is abundant and the wheat should be excellent this year with good quality and tonnage
